Activities of The Endocrine & Metabolic Disease Trust 2001 — 2002
The Endocrine & Metabolic Disease Trust was established on 15th April 2001. This unit started with a single research fellow Miss. Nimai de Silva. Since office space was not available at the Faculty of Medical Sciences this research unit operated as an independently funded organisation. Office space was made available by the Osteoporosis Society of Sri Lanka at No. 26/6, Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha, Colombo 07, Sri Lanka.

From 15th April 2001 - November 2001 the activities of the unit were conducted by Prof. Devaka Fernando, Dr. Namal Weerasooriya, Dr. Manika Jayawardena, and Dr. Chaminda Jayawarne. Dr. Nimantha de Alwis & Miss Nimali de Silva. All of whom worked in an honorary capacity. In November 2001 Mr. Tilney Fernando joined us as the Research Coordinator and Chief Administrative officer at The Endocrine & Metabolic Disease Trust. Mr. Sajith Gunawardena Computer Programmer & Miss Gayani Wijayasinghe Secretary / Receptionist were employed in December 2001.

The funding of The Endocrine & Metabolic Disease Trust has been entirely on donations made by corporate donors.

This brief report is to inform these donors of the activities of the unit from 18th April 2001 – 18th November 2002. Support provided to the Osteoporosis Society of Sri Lanka.

The Osteoporosis Society was set up using on educational grant by New Zealand milk product Ltd. The The Endocrine & Metabolic Disease Trust provided Administrative & Research support to the Osteoporosis Society of Sri Lanka. The Osteoporosis Society thus did not have to employ its own staff. The following activities of the Osteoporosis Society were supported by the The Endocrine & Metabolic Disease Trust

 
Development or Nutritional Guidelines for the Management of Osteoporosis in Sri Lanka.
 
Development of Guidelines for the management of Osteoporosis in Sri Lanka.
 
Lectures and symposia in association with Ceylon College of Physicians and Sri Lanka Medical Association.
 
Lectures to the General Public at Sri Lanka University of Sri Lanka Federation of Women.
 
Osteoporosis Module of Training Program of Postgraduate institute of Medicine staff.

Research Activities

Postgraduate course in diabetes / Postgraduate Course in Endocrinology
These courses were generously funded by Novo / Nordisk A/S and USV Ltd. The Courses were held at Golden Sun Resort Waskaduwa and Triton Hotel Ahungalla 90 PGIM registered registrars attended.
 
 
Training Program for Members of Pharmaceutical Industry.
These courses were generously funded by Novo / Nordisk A/S and USV Ltd. The Courses were held at Golden Sun Resort Waskaduwa and Triton Hotel Ahungalla 90 PGIM registered registrars attended.
 
 
Training Program for Gymnasium Staff.
With the support of Roche Pharmaceutical we conducted a several of lectures to Gymnasium trainers at all the leading Gymnasia in Colombo & Suburbs.

The Generics of Type II Diabetes

      Miss Nimali de Silva who is the principal worker in this project is a non clinical scientist with a Masters Degree in Biochemistry. She is currently reading for a PhD under the supervision of Prof Devaka Fernando. She hat published 3 papers in peer received journals and has presented her data at the International Diabetes Federation in Mexico. This project has been supported by Novo/Nordlsk A/S, Elli Lilly & Co, Laboratories Saviour, U. S. V. Ltd. & Roche Ltd. With their generous funding she has been trained in Laboratory Techniques in the University of New Castle in UK. Laboratory work is to be continued in the University of London in the year 2003

Diabetes in the Young in Sri Lanka.

This Project is conducted by Dr Rashan Liyanage and will culminate in a Ph.D. his supervisors are Prof Devaka Fernando & Dr. K Sanjeevi of the Karolinska Institute Sweden in year 2005. His project was initiated by a generous grant by Novo/Nordisk

  The funding of this project was presented at the Sri Lanka Medical Association sessions 2002. This was funded by Roche Ltd.

Conferences and Training
Dr. Noel Somasundaram was sponsored to attend the certificate course in Bone Densitometry in Hong Kong. This was generously supported by Leo Pharmaceuticals Ltd and New Zealand Milk Products Limited.
